Upcycling Challenge

This week at LCOM, we are hosting another card challenge for y'all! The goal is to UPCYCLE!

Basically, that means to use (or re-use) items that are not typically thought of as scrapbooking or card-making embellishments -- store tags, packaging, ticket stubs, bottle caps. The possibilities are ENDLESS!

We hope you join us because it's FUN to think outside of the box once in a while! Just look at what the Card Design Team has come up with!

But, first let me introduce you to our Guest Designer this week:

My name is Moriah Macdonald, better known as Fuzzy Slippers because I often craft in my pj's and slippers! I live in the midst the apple orchards and farmland part of Massachusetts with my fantastic (seriously I got lucky here and I know it) husband, my cardigan corgi Cadfael, and my foster tabby Amy. I've been crafting all my life and come from a long line of creative men and women (carpenters, seamstress', painters, knitters, you get the picture). Initially, most of my crafting was self preservation. In my family you needed to look busy or someone would give you something to do! As a result I have been lucky enough to try my hand and lots of different crafts that most folks associate with their grandparents (like tatting), but when I found paper crafting I was totally hooked.

Here's the newspaper clipping:

Here's her card:

When I was told the theme was "upcycling" I was excited and terrified!!! I've "gone green" for other craft projects, but never for a card. I took a few days to try to figure something out when it hit me. The newspaper! I tore strips of newsprint and laid out a pattern. Ran the card base through a dry embossing machine to get the background dots. and glued the strips on. I fashioned a "bow" and adhered it to a couple pieces of patterned paper. I added the flower and used an old flea market tag (another upcycle) for added bling. I stamped the sentiment on the tag and voila! This was so much fun I'm headed back to my studio to see what I can do with that odd earring...

Moriah..thanks so much for playing along with us this week! Your card is absolutely amazing!

And now.....*drumroll*....here are the CDT's work:

Anita used this tag from Talbot's so cleverly! What a great way to truly personalize a card for her friend who loves the store! The colors of red, black, and white are so classic.

Corinne went all out and upcycled three unusual items -- a giftwrap from Borders (alphabet & animals), a toy (crown), and a notebook cover (girl/transparency). What great embellies for her teen cousin's birthday card.

Dani's card uses some tissue paper from a delivery box. She cut them into flowers and adhered them to make this elegant and gorgeous card! Let me tell you, the recipient of this card sure is lucky!!

JJ used those beautiful Prima packages that we all go ga-ga for along with packaging for hair clips to make her card. And look at how beautiful her layering is of these items! The lay-out is amazing as well!

Melissa is such a genius! She used a gorgeous Christmas ornament as the main embellishment for a Holiday card. What a breathtaking creation!

Jerusha's fun and adorable card features a corkboard coaster -- so perfect for her sand scene! The misting and coloring are stellar as well!

Sandi's creation features samples from an Imaginisce packaging. The different patterns just complement the other elements of her oh-so-cute card! Such a pretty way to recycle!

Now it's your turn - let's see your cards where you are going 'green' and upcycling! Get your card posted here by Saturday July 31st at 8PM EST. Then winners will be posted here on Sunday the 1st. Use Your Stash and Inspirational Challenges Power Week

Last month we had a Power Week Challenge and so you know the drill if I tell you that LCOM Card Team brings you another Power Week.  We've got not just one, but two challenges for you. You've got the power to choose to do one, two, or a combination.  The first challenge is Use Your Stash.  Rusha challenged us to use our stash and it has to be older than 2 months...WOW...I'm sure you will find this way difficult....NOT!!!:) The second challenge is an Inspirational Challenge.  Dani challenged us to use a household object as your inspiration-the design on a Kleenex box or the colors of a blanket-you name it. You must include a photo of your inspirational piece. So....here's what we did with the challenges! Hope you are inspired and will feel the POWER!!!
Use Your Stash Challenge...
JJ
Everything on this card is at least a year old. (and the letters are at least 6 months) Isn't it just beautiful? A little glimmer mist, a mask and some pearls glamming up her card.  WOW!!!

Emily

Emily chose to make a tag card.  She says that she loved using her older stuff  because it really had her digging through her stash and it was so much fun!!! Love the vintage feel of this with the newspaper like pattern paper and the hardware.  Then she makes it really pop with the white flower and the red felt bird.

Inspirational Challenge...
Corinne

These are Corinne's favorite couch pillows.
She used similar colors and was inspired by the pillows' designs. Aren't those animals just adorable?Such a cute card!!!

Inspirational Challenge and Use Your Stash Challenge:
Anita

This is a print in her dining room which she has always loved.

Those papers are really old. She hasn't used the tulle of this color in a couple of months and those brads are a few years old.  You can see similarities in the print and the card...colors, flowers.  I just love the way Anita made the flowers from the strips of papers to make her flowers 3D.  I love the subtleness of the colors in this card!
Dani
Dani got these cute little hanging baskets at Target's $1 spot awhile ago. Don't you just love the bright colors and the flower pattern!!
The stamp set that is about 6 months old, so she was able to play in the use your stash challenge too!! Look how it mimics the buckets from Target!!! I love the stitched bowed ribbon tied around the card and look how perfect she has the glitter around the many thanks greeting card.  Such a summery card!!!
Melissa
Melissa's inspiration was the colors in her shower curtain.
These basic grey papers are wisteria, and have had them longer than 2 months. The flower was from Tink's crop at KVHS. The rubon is something she hashad since she started scrapbooking.  I just love the 3D flower and the gold leaves on the card.  Absolutely stunning!
Rusha

Rusha's inspiration came from this photo hanging on her wall in her livingroom.

She says that the little boy in the card reminds her of her son, Aiden. His favorite colour is purple - so that is why there is so much purple on the card. She used some paper that she has had lying around for over a year, some cardstock that she has had for at least two years, and a digital stamp that she bought several months ago but has never used.  Such a sweet, endearing card!!!
Sandi
Sandi's inspiration was the quilt that her Mom made her by hand that stays on her bed.
She used the Marrakesh basic grey to mimic the quilt squares and the wide ribbon to mimic the fabric and add dimension.  These are all things that she has had in her stash for at least a year.  I love how she grunged this card up to give it a little personality.

Now it's your turn - let's see your cards where you are using your stash or using an inspiration to create a card(or both). Get your card posted here by Saturday July 24th at 8PM EST. Then winners will be posted here on Sunday the 25th. And because this week we are all about giving you the power to choose, if you win - you get your choice of prize! You can opt for the Prize Pack (shown below) or you can opt for a Guest DT spot with the card team for the week of August 2nd. Please indicate either PP or GDT after your name in the link. We can't wait to see what you create!
