Upcycling Challenge

This week at LCOM, we are hosting another card challenge for y'all! The goal is to UPCYCLE!

Basically, that means to use (or re-use) items that are not typically thought of as scrapbooking or card-making embellishments -- store tags, packaging, ticket stubs, bottle caps. The possibilities are ENDLESS!

We hope you join us because it's FUN to think outside of the box once in a while! Just look at what the Card Design Team has come up with!

But, first let me introduce you to our Guest Designer this week:

My name is Moriah Macdonald, better known as Fuzzy Slippers because I often craft in my pj's and slippers! I live in the midst the apple orchards and farmland part of Massachusetts with my fantastic (seriously I got lucky here and I know it) husband, my cardigan corgi Cadfael, and my foster tabby Amy. I've been crafting all my life and come from a long line of creative men and women (carpenters, seamstress', painters, knitters, you get the picture). Initially, most of my crafting was self preservation. In my family you needed to look busy or someone would give you something to do! As a result I have been lucky enough to try my hand and lots of different crafts that most folks associate with their grandparents (like tatting), but when I found paper crafting I was totally hooked.

Here's the newspaper clipping:

Here's her card:

When I was told the theme was "upcycling" I was excited and terrified!!! I've "gone green" for other craft projects, but never for a card. I took a few days to try to figure something out when it hit me. The newspaper! I tore strips of newsprint and laid out a pattern. Ran the card base through a dry embossing machine to get the background dots. and glued the strips on. I fashioned a "bow" and adhered it to a couple pieces of patterned paper. I added the flower and used an old flea market tag (another upcycle) for added bling. I stamped the sentiment on the tag and voila! This was so much fun I'm headed back to my studio to see what I can do with that odd earring...

Moriah..thanks so much for playing along with us this week! Your card is absolutely amazing!

And now.....*drumroll*....here are the CDT's work:

Anita used this tag from Talbot's so cleverly! What a great way to truly personalize a card for her friend who loves the store! The colors of red, black, and white are so classic.

Corinne went all out and upcycled three unusual items -- a giftwrap from Borders (alphabet & animals), a toy (crown), and a notebook cover (girl/transparency). What great embellies for her teen cousin's birthday card.

Dani's card uses some tissue paper from a delivery box. She cut them into flowers and adhered them to make this elegant and gorgeous card! Let me tell you, the recipient of this card sure is lucky!!

JJ used those beautiful Prima packages that we all go ga-ga for along with packaging for hair clips to make her card. And look at how beautiful her layering is of these items! The lay-out is amazing as well!

Melissa is such a genius! She used a gorgeous Christmas ornament as the main embellishment for a Holiday card. What a breathtaking creation!

Jerusha's fun and adorable card features a corkboard coaster -- so perfect for her sand scene! The misting and coloring are stellar as well!

Sandi's creation features samples from an Imaginisce packaging. The different patterns just complement the other elements of her oh-so-cute card! Such a pretty way to recycle!

Now it's your turn - let's see your cards where you are going 'green' and upcycling! Get your card posted here by Saturday July 31st at 8PM EST. Then winners will be posted here on Sunday the 1st. And because this week we are all about giving you the power to choose, if you win - you get your choice of prize! You can opt for the Prize Pack (shown below) or you can opt for a Guest DT spot with the card team for the week of August 9th. Please indicate either PP or GDT after your name in the link. We can't wait to see what you create!
This week's Prize Pack - Henry's Brilliance 6X6 paper pad and stamps.

Remember that you also get to post this on your blog!

Have a fabulous day!!!
